🌿 Update from Cornwall Council's Full Council Meeting 🌿![]()

Today, the Full Council of Cornwall Council met and debated a motion regarding the Public Realm Weed Treatment Programme. There was extensive discussion with a wide range of views expressed on the use of glyphosate. While some supported chemical use and others opposed it, there was broad concern across the chamber about the process followed, along with acknowledgements and apologies regarding how parish and town councils have been treated.![]()

✔️ Policy recognition - The Council recognised that the decision to reintroduce chemical weed treatment using glyphosate represents a significant policy reversal with important ecological, public health, and democratic implications for communities across Cornwall.![]()

⏸️ Pause on rollout - The planned commencement of chemical weed treatment (scheduled for May 2026) will be paused until a meaningful public consultation has taken place.![]()

📣 Public consultation & opt-out extension - The Council acknowledged that the three-week opt-out window for parish and town councils was inadequate (and included the Easter period). This will now be extended to **30 days following publication of the consultation results**.![]()

📘 Clearer guidance - Clearer guidance will be provided to town and parish councils on the minimum required standards of the urban network.![]()

💷 Review of financial terms - An urgent review will be undertaken of the financial terms of the opt-out scheme. As currently structured:![]()

Councils opting out of glyphosate treatment would lose associated estate improvement works. They would only receive funding equivalent to chemical treatment costs (£343.45 per km). Additional costs (alternative weed management, waste clearance, liability insurance) would fall locally![]()

The Council has committed to reviewing and decoupling this arrangement.![]()
